Paulo Cardoso

Paulo Cardoso was born in Lisbon on September 7th, 1953, into a family of musicians and visual artists. After completing his degree in Chemistry, he simultaneously attended the National Conservatory and the School of Fine Arts in Lisbon. In 1977, he developed an interest in Astrology and from 1978 onwards, he collaborated on various music, theater, and film productions as a set designer and painter. Throughout his career, he has published 49 books and presented around 30 solo exhibitions, as well as approximately 40 group exhibitions.

Since 1978, the roles he has taken on also unfold in the performing arts venues: as a set designer and painter, he has collaborated on various theater, music, and film productions, performing in Lisbon venues such as the São Luís Theater, the Grand Hall of the National Conservatory, the Grand Auditorium of the Belém Cultural Center, and the natural amphitheaters of the Capuchos Festival. Alongside his growing commitment to Astrology, Paulo Cardoso has been incorporating the symbolic language of the stars into his drawings and prints.

Since 1987, he has exhibited his work individually, with his work being shown at the Off Züri Gallery in Zurich, and at the Poligrupo Renascença Space, where he presented the exhibition “Earth viewed from the Seventh Heaven” in Lisbon. That same year, he also participated in collective presentations at the Espiral Gallery in Oeiras, the R75 Gallery in Montechoro, the Art Gallery of the Casino in Estoril, the Sfumato Gallery in Figueira da Foz, and in 1988, he exhibited at the EG Gallery in Porto before returning to the capital to participate in the “Pessoa in Lisbon” exhibition at the São Carlos Theater.

In 1990, another one of the revolutionaries from the Orpheu generation (Mário de Sá-Carneiro) served as a guide for the creation of Paulo Cardoso’s mystical and artistic works, exhibited at the S. Mamede Gallery in Lisbon.

He regularly collaborates with various media outlets.
