José Nuno da Câmara Pereira

Born in 1937 on the island of Santa Maria, Azores, this artist holds a degree in Painting from the Lisbon School of Fine Arts.
In 1985/1986, they were a Resident Artist at the Center for Modern Art, and in 1987, they received a scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. In 1988, they attended the Center for Advanced Visual Studies at the M.I.T. – Massachusetts Institute of Technology, with a scholarship from the Luso-American Foundation. They have been honored with the following awards: Domingos Rebelo Prize, Regional Directorate of Culture, Azores (2000). AICA Exhibition – Philae, Lisbon, 1st Prize; 3rd Exhibition of Plastic Arts, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon (1986). “The Future is Today,” Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon; 1st Azores and Atlantic Biennial, Azores, Honorable Mention from SREC.
They are dedicated to various disciplines such as painting, sculpture, and installation. Their portfolio includes several works of public art and interventions in architectural spaces, such as the walls of the high altar of the Main Church of Almada, at the invitation of architect Nuno Teotónio Pereira.
In 2010, they were awarded the Autonomous Insignia of Recognition by the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores.
They passed away on January 14, 2018.
