What types of art do you sell?

We specialize in offering a diverse collection of original prints created by talented Portuguese related artists or editors. Our curated selection includes a variety of printmaking techniques such as intaglio, screen printing, lithography, photography, and digital print. Our goal is to provide art enthusiasts with a wide range of high-quality, unique, and visually captivating pieces that cater to different tastes and preferences.

Are all works signed by the artists?
Yes, all the artworks we offer are signed by the artists themselves. This ensures the authenticity and uniqueness of each piece. In addition to the artist’s signature, the artworks are typically numbered and come with a certificate or seal from the respective printmaking center or studio to further verify their authenticity. We are committed to providing our customers with genuine and original art pieces, so you can trust that the work you purchase is a true representation of the artist’s vision and talent.
How do you determine the value of an art piece?
The value of an art piece is influenced by various factors, including the artist’s reputation, the work’s rarity, the technique employed, the edition size, and the overall quality of the piece. While we believe that the art should be valued for its intrinsic qualities, seasoned art investors may also consider market trends and the historical performance of the artist’s works to gain a comprehensive understanding of the artwork’s value. Bearing this in mind, we strive to offer a diverse collection of artworks that cater to a range of preferences and budgets, while ensuring that the value aligns with the current art market.
When an edition is sold out, can another one be made?
No, once an edition is sold out, it cannot be reproduced. To preserve the exclusivity and value of the limited edition artworks, the print’s matrix is destroyed at the end of the edition process. For example, engraving plates are drilled and scratched to prevent unauthorized parallel editions by the artist or editor. This practice ensures the integrity of the edition and maintains the artwork’s collectible status, making the existing copies more valuable and sought-after by collectors.
Can I return an item?

At The Portuguese Art Gallery, your satisfaction is our top priority. If, for any reason, you are not happy with your purchase, you may return the art piece within 14 days of receipt for a full refund, excluding shipping costs. Is Original Print considered an "original art work"?

Yes, Original Print is considered an “original art work.” An Original Print is created from an image produced on a surface worked by the artist, such as a stone, wood block, copper plate, or even a simple paper drawing. The resulting print is considered an original art work, as it is part of a limited and unrepeatable edition, numbered and signed by the artist, and reinforced by the respective printmaking center or studio seal stamped on it.

To learn more about the authenticity and uniqueness of Portuguese Printmaking, please visit our Authenticity and Uniqueness of Portuguese Printmaking page.

What does it mean PA and HC?

PA (Prova de Artista) or Artist’s Proof refers to the prints made for the artist, which are typically 10% of the total edition size. HC (Hors Commerce) represents the prints made for the editor, also usually 10% of the total edition size. For example, an edition may have 100 prints + 10 PA + 10 HC.

We offer a wide variety of options for matting, moulding, and glazing, including acid-free mats and UV-protective glass or acrylic. The materials we use can have a significant impact on the final appearance and preservation of your artwork, so we make sure to use materials that are both aesthetically pleasing and protective. During your custom framing consultation, we will discuss your preferences and provide recommendations for materials that will complement your artwork and meet your specific needs.
Glazing options explained

Glazing is a crucial component of the framing process, as it protects the artwork from external elements. The two main glazing options are glass and acrylic glazing (also known as plexiglass).

Glass is a popular choice due to its clarity and scratch-resistant properties. However, it can be fragile and heavy, making it difficult to ship and handle. Additionally, it poses a safety risk if it breaks during transportation or if the framed artwork falls.

Acrylic glazing is lightweight, shatter-resistant, and easier to ship than glass. It also offers UV protection to help prevent fading and discoloration. However, it is more susceptible to scratching and may require more frequent cleaning than glass.

When it comes to glass, there are different types available. Here are some examples:

1. Regular Glass: This is the most common type of glass used in framing. It is affordable and offers good clarity. However, regular glass does not provide any protection against ultraviolet (UV) light, which can cause fading and damage to artwork over time.

2. UV-Protective Glass: This type of glass has a special coating that blocks up to 99% of UV light. It is recommended for artwork that will be displayed in direct sunlight or bright rooms to prevent fading or discoloration.

3. Anti-Glare Glass: This type of glass has a special matte finish that reduces glare and reflections, making it ideal for artwork that will be displayed in rooms with high levels of light.

4. Museum Glass: This type of glass is the highest quality and provides the best protection for artwork. It blocks up to 99% of UV light and has a special coating that virtually eliminates reflections, providing the clearest view of the artwork possible. However, museum glass is the most expensive option.

The cost of each type of glass varies based on the size and complexity of the framing project. At The Portuguese Art Gallery, we offer acrylic glazing for shipping and glass for local pick-up. We can provide guidance on which type of glazing is best suited for your specific artwork and display environment.

Do you offer glass or acrylic glazing for your framed artworks?
Yes, we offer both glass and acrylic glazing for our framed artworks, depending on your preferences and needs. For customers who can pick up their orders directly from our location in St. Louis, MO, we offer the option of glass for framing. However, due to transportation limitations, we are unable to ship framed artworks with glass. In such cases, we offer acrylic glazing (also known as plexiglass) as a durable and lightweight alternative. To learn more about the differences between glass and acrylic glazing, please see the Glazing options explained FAQ.
Can I request a specific type of glazing for my custom framing project?
Yes, you can request a specific type of glazing for your custom framing project. We offer both glass and acrylic glazing options for our framed artworks. If you have a specific preference or requirement for your artwork, please let us know during your custom framing consultation, and we will work with you to find the best solution. Keep in mind that there may be limitations on certain types of glazing, depending on the artwork’s size and weight and shipping limitations. However, we will do our best to accommodate your preferences and provide the best possible outcome for your custom framing project.

How should I care for and maintain my framed artwork to ensure its longevity?

Proper care and maintenance of your framed artwork can help ensure its longevity and protect it from damage. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

1. Avoid direct sunlight: Exposure to direct sunlight can cause fading and damage to your artwork. Make sure to hang your framed piece away from direct sunlight or use UV-resistant glass or acrylic glazing to protect it.

2. Keep it dry: Moisture and humidity can cause warping, mold, and other damage to your framed artwork. Keep your artwork in a dry area, away from damp walls or areas with high humidity.

3. Handle with care: When moving or handling your framed artwork, make sure to do so carefully and gently. Avoid touching the surface of the artwork and always lift the piece by the frame or support.

4. Dust regularly: Dust can accumulate on the surface of your framed artwork, which can attract moisture and cause damage over time. Use a soft, dry brush or cloth to dust the surface of the frame and artwork regularly.

5. Schedule regular maintenance: It’s a good idea to have your framed artwork inspected and maintained by a professional framer every few years. They can check for any signs of damage or wear and make any necessary repairs or adjustments.

By following these tips, you can help ensure that your framed artwork remains in excellent condition for years to come.

What is the cost of custom framing services, and does it vary based on the size or complexity of the project?
